“Mae Kha River” or “Mae Kha Canal” is a natural waterway. Its source lies the Suthep-Pui National Park and flows through the City of Chiang Mai which eventually joins the Ping River at various points along about 30 kilometers.
“Mae Kha Canal” is regarded as one of seven auspicious significance relating to the establishment for the city. The City of “Chiang Mai” was founded by King Mengrai in 1296.’”
The watercourse of Mae Kha flows from the north straight into the city and the city moat at “Sri Phum” corner on the east of the city. In the past, Mae Kha Canal was as a natural outer moat which had been regarded as an important watercourse. Its function was as feeding the city and used by residents of the city for transportation.
Due to rampant urbanization, it has a great impact toward “Mae Kha” resulted in a narrow canal. Then clean water cannot flow properly, causing more waste dumped into the canal and has turned the canal into sewer.
Public governmental agencies and private sectors together with academics launched the developmental project of Mae Kha Canal on 21st March, 2018 presided by Air Chief Marshal Satipong Sukvimol, His Majesty’s Principal Private Secretary at the Lanna Polytechnic Chiang Mai Technological College. The project was adopted His Majesty King Rama X’s initiatives in the revitalization of Mae Kha Canal for project implementation.
On 25th December, 2018, His Royal Highness Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti Sirivibulyarajakumar graciously visited Satta Mangala Garden at Mae Kha Canal.
A central wastewater treatment worked along both sides of the canal and re-landscaping project phase 1 (Rakaeng Bridge to Pratu Kom) were completed in 2022 under the administration of Mr.Assanee Buranupakorn, Mayor of Chiang Mai Municipality. The project is clearly shown that “Mae Kha Canal” is revitalized and regained its significance from the past. It is hoped that the operation would be better for the future development.
